Dr. Ralph B. Monnett, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Ralph B. Monnett, Jr. attended the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State University, earning his Bachelor's Degree of Microbiology in 1974. He graduated Summa cum laude(4.0 grade point average, all quarters). He attended Ohio State's School of Medicine, graduating in 1979. He completed his internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, then performed his residency at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He served as Senior and Chief resident in 1983.In 1984 he became the Founder & Director of Monnett Eye & Surgery Center in Sebastian, Florida, and he is Owner, Director, and Chief Surgeon of Riverside Surgery Center at the same location. He is affiliated with Sebastian River Medical Center, Sebastian, Florida.
Dr. Monnett is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). He is also CERTIFIED SPECIFICALLY for LASIK as well as SPECIFICALLY for SMALL INCISION CATARACT SURGERY by The American Board of Eye Surgeons (ABES). ABES certifications are based directly upon live observation of surgical skills and review of outcomes, rather than the "book" knowledge tested by the ABO. Consistently being the first to bring the latest proven technology to the East Central Florida Coast throughout his 27 years of practice, Dr. Monnett continues to be on the cutting edge of the newest technologies. including the latest procedures for Cataract Surgery, Vision Correction, Vision Without Glasses At ANY AGE, and AESTHETICS:
1. Providing GLASSES-FREE VISION using ACCOMMODATING and PREMIUM IOL'S, including Acrysof ReSTOR, Crystalens , and REZOOM Premium IOL's; Dr Monnett is certified for all three of these FDA approved Premium IOL's, that can provide patient's day to day vision without dependence on ANY glasses for distance, near, and in between.
2. What he likes to call "ULTRA SOFT TOUCH CATARACT SURGERY" intentionally using the very least amount of vibration energy (known as Phacoemulsification) to remove cataracts, in order to provide CLEARER VISION FASTER for the patient. LESS ENERGY, LESS SURGERY, FASTER HEALING.
3. BOTOX and DERMAL FILLERS, such as Restylane, Radiesse, Juvaderm, and others.
4. CustomCornea LASIK utilizing Wavefront Technology through the Alcon LADARVISION Excimer Laser System.
5. Corneal Transplants, including the REVOLUTIONARY new DSAEK procedure with greatly reduced visual recovery time.
6. The Staar Visian ICL (Intraocular Collamer Lens) Insertion (for which he is also certified) - for correcting amounts of eye prescription beyond the limits of Lasik, or for patients who are poor candidates for Lasik.
7. Advanced surgeries for glaucoma, including Optonol MINI SHUNTS as well as VALVES;
8. Scalpel-less Eyelid Lifts, often proven as Medically Necessary, and covered by Insurance and Medicare.
9. Injections of the "BREAKTHROUGH" drugs LUCENTIS, and AVASTIN for Wet Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, and other Retinal diseases
10. CK (Conductive Keratoplasty, for restoring reading vision lost to middle age.
In addition, Dr Monnett is certified by Allergan in the use of BOTOX and RESTYLANE. He is certified by Summit Technology and Alcon Ladarvision for LASIK correction of Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism, and in the use of the Microkeratome. Dr. Monnett has previously completed the Charles Casebeer Mini-fellowship in Scottsdale, Arizona where he received ALK and Microkeratome Certification, and has also received Charles Casebeer Advanced Radial Keratotomy/Refractive Surgery Certification. As mentioned above he is certified specifically for LASIK, and specifically for Small Incision Cataract Surgery.
Dr. Monnett's Professional Society memberships include the American Board of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology. He received the Silver Honoree Award from the Summit Autonomous Society in 2000 for LASIK surgery.
His continuing medical education credits include: the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Symposium from 1985 to 2008, including 40 credit hours earned each year, Bloodborne Pathogens, HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence and Risk Management from 1997 to 2000, including 40 credit hours earned each year, and the American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology 11-7-1998's "Clinical Experience with Scleral Expansion for the Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia." As a self-proclaimed perffectionist, Dr Monnett spends countless hours scouring the internet for new cutting edge technology in eyecare, and is constantly updating his knowledge and skills by attending several other educational meetings throughout each year.

Dr. Monnett is married to the love of his life, Teresa, and together they have 2 beautiful, vibrant, and joyful daughters. Of his wife he says "She is the BEST THING that has ever happened to me. She is certainly the Woman behind the man". He loves living in Sebastian, and is an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.
